Give someone a helping hand (Advent Day 4)

helping handsFace it – sometimes we need a helping hand, but may be reluctant to ask for assistance. And we all know many other people who are the same way.

Do you have a friend who is ill or recovering from surgery who could use help running a few errands or walking the dog? Maybe you know a mom with a little one (or more) who could use an hour or two to take care of some Christmas shopping, or take a shower? Or perhaps there’s that sweet elderly neighbor or congregation member who could use a ride to the grocery store or doctor’s office.

Whoever that person may be, offer to give them a helping hand. If your friend is concerned about putting you out, mention that you can run her errands while running your own – one trip to the drugstore or post office is easier than two (and better for the environment!)

Offer from the heart and keep it simple so that your recipient feels cared for but you don’t feel overburdened.

Feel free to share your experience or your creative suggestions. If you’re on Twitter or Instagram, share using the #24daysofgiving hashtag. Let’s spread some love and good cheer!

Did you miss a day?

Day 1: Give yourself 5 minutes

Day 2: Give someone your attention

Day 3: Give time to a worthy cause

#24daysofgiving is an Advent experiment in being called to come into being through the practices of love and compassion, while reflecting on the coming of Christ into the world.
